Getting Your Truck Ready for the May Long Weekend — A Saskatchewan Towing and Road Trip Checklist
The May long weekend is the unofficial start of summer on the prairies. Campers come out of storage, boats get hitched up, and the highways between Indian Head, Fort Qu’Appelle, Katepwa Beach, and the Qu’Appelle Valley fill up with families heading to the lake. But if your truck or SUV has been sitting through a Saskatchewan winter and you have not checked it over before hooking up a trailer, you are rolling the dice on a breakdown that could wreck the weekend before it starts. Here is what you should check before you go.
Tires: The Foundation of a Safe Tow
Start with the tires on your tow vehicle. Check the pressure when the tires are cold, because a loaded truck towing a trailer puts significantly more stress on underinflated tires, especially on hot pavement. Look at the tread depth and check for cracks, bulges, or uneven wear from winter driving. If you are running all-terrain tires on your RAM 1500 or Grand Cherokee, make sure they still have enough tread to handle a gravel campground road after an evening rain. Then check your trailer tires. Trailer tires that have been sitting all winter can develop flat spots and sidewall cracking from UV exposure. If they are more than five years old, replace them before your first trip regardless of how the tread looks. Buyers across Regina, Balgonie, White City, and Pilot Butte who are pulling boats to Last Mountain Lake or campers to Rowan’s Ravine should treat trailer tires as a safety item, not a maybe-next-year item.
Brakes, Bearings, and Trailer Lights
If your trailer has electric brakes, test the brake controller in your truck before you load up. Make sure the controller is gaining and the brakes are actually engaging. Pack wheel bearing grease and check that your trailer hubs are not running dry after months of sitting. Inspect every trailer light, including brake lights, turn signals, and running lights. A burned-out bulb is a ticket waiting to happen on Highway 10 or Highway 1. If you are not comfortable doing this yourself, book a trailer inspection at our service department. It takes less than an hour and costs a fraction of what a roadside breakdown does.
Fluids, Cooling, and Engine Prep
Towing generates heat, and heat is what kills engines and transmissions. Check your coolant level and condition. If it has not been changed in two years or more, get it flushed before you spend a weekend pulling a loaded camper through the Qu’Appelle Valley in 30-degree heat. Check your transmission fluid level and colour. Dark or burnt-smelling fluid is a warning sign. Top up your engine oil if it is between changes, and make sure your windshield washer reservoir is full, because the gravel roads around Balcarres, Melville, and Broadview will coat your windshield before you reach the campsite.
Hitch, Safety Chains, and Load Distribution
Confirm that your hitch receiver, ball mount, and coupler are all rated for the weight you are towing. A common mistake is using a Class II hitch setup to pull a trailer that needs a Class III or IV. Check that your safety chains are crossed under the coupler and that they are not dragging on the ground. If you are towing more than 5,000 pounds, a weight-distribution hitch with sway control will transform the towing experience. It levels the truck, reduces sway in crosswinds on the open prairie, and makes the whole rig feel planted rather than loose. Our parts department stocks weight-distribution systems and can install them before your trip.
